Google Milestones

Google Milestones

According to Google lore, company founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin were not terribly fond of each other when they first met as Stanford University graduate students in computer science in 1995. Larry was a 24-year-old University of Michigan alumnus on a weekend visit; Sergey, 23, was among a group of students assigned to show him around. They argued about every topic they discussed. Their strong opinions and divergent viewpoints would eventually find common ground in a unique approach to solving one of computing's biggest challenges: retrieving relevant information from a massive set of data.

Reason to Ranking Drop

1. Your website changes
Most webmasters update their web pages regularly. As long as the changes are only small, this won't have a big effect on your rankings. However, if you re-design your web pages or if you optimize a page for a new search term then search engines might re-calculate your search engine rankings.
Google even has a filter for changed web pages. If you change your web pages, Google will temporarily apply a filter to your sites. Details can be found here.
Required action: If you have web pages with high search engine rankings then you should change these pages with great care.

2. The links to your website change
If you have an old website with a grown inbound link structure then it's not likely that your site rankings will drop because of a link change.
If the links to your site are mainly paid links that suddenly disappear or get discounted by Google then the loss of these links can be enough to cause a significant ranking drop.
In addition, sudden changes in the linking structure of a website make your website suspicious.
Required action: If you heavily rely on paid links you might want to reconsider your linking strategy. Try to get inbound links that last.
Continually getting links is essential to keep high rankings. If you don't work on your links then your website will be replaced by better linked web pages in the search results.

3. The websites of your competitors change
Everybody wants to be on Google's first result page. For that reason, it's only natural that other websites will be listed better than yours if you don't react.
Many websites target the same keywords as you do. If these other websites have better content and better links than your site then it's only natural that these sites get better rankings.
Required action: You must offer better content than your competitors. Make sure that you offer many web pages that are relevant to your search terms and that you have better inbound links than your competitors.

4. Spam elements on your web pages
Search engines don't like spam. If search engines find out that you use cloaking, hidden text, doorway pages or any other spam technique on your web pages then it is extremely likely that your website will be penalized.
Required action: Remove all spam elements from your web pages. Just because your website hasn't been penalized yet doesn't mean that search engines won't find the spam elements in the near future.

5. Search engine algorithm changes
Search engines are continually improving their ranking algorithms. While most changes are rather subtle, some ranking algorithm changes can have a major impact on the rankings of your web pages.
Required action: Wait for some days to find out if the ranking drop is not just temporarily. Then optimize your web pages so that they reflect the latest search engine algorithms.

6. Technical problems
Your web server can be the reason for a ranking drop. If your website is down when the search engine spider tries to access your website then search engines cannot give your web pages high rankings because they don't know your pages.
Some websites display the correct web page in the web browser but the server returns an error code. In that case, search engines won't index the web pages.
Required action: Make sure that your website is hosted on a reliable server that has no downtime. Check the HTTP status code that your website returns.

Link Building / Link Popularity

Link Building/Link Popularity

PageRank is the measure of importance Google assigns to a Web page on a scale of 1 to 10.

You can check the PageRank value of every page you visit by downloading the Google Toolbar.

Google’s founders, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, formulated a Search Engine
algorithm that shifted the ranking weight to off-page factors. They developed a formula called PageRank, in which the algorithm counts the number of sites that link to a page and then assigns the page an importance score on a scale of 1-10. The higher the number and importance of sites that link to your page, the higher the PageRank of your Web site.

What is Link Popularity?

Link Popularity refers to the number of links pointing TO your site FROM other sites on the Web.

The Search Engines consider your site more important and rank it higher if several other sites link to your site.

Quality links means links from related pages and with high rankings in search engines.
Building Quality and Relevant back links is a dual advantage where you attract vistors from the reciprocal linking site and simultaneously boost your websites Page Rank.

Types of links

There are two types of links you can establish on the web:

Reciprocal links

Link exchange is an easier way to establish links from other websites to your website.

In link exchange process, you trade links with prospective partner sites by offering a link to their site from your own site.

This method is a fast way to establish several hundred links to your website. However, it may not get you great benefits.

Reciprocal links
Both sites link to each other

One-way links

To establish ‘only-incoming’ links also called ‘one-way links’ or ‘Non-Reciprocal links’.

Only incoming links are the links established on the other websites where you do not need to link back to them.

Inbound links
Site A receives a link from Site B

There are various compelling reasons and methods to establish such one-way links which include linking back from a different website that you may own, publishing articles on sites, content syndication, listing in trade directories and giving out press releases in news networks.

Outbound links
Site A links out to Site B

Calculating percentage OR Bounce Rate

Bounce rate is expressed as a percentage. To calculate bounce rate, take the number of single-page visits and divide by the total number of visits, then multiply by 100.

Vsp = Visit of Singe Page/Single time

Vt = Visit of Total page

If, on one day, a page receives 335 visits and 320 are bounces, and the next day receives 950 visits and 720 bounces, the bounce rates would be 95.5% and 75.8%, respectively. Although on the second day, the page had more bounces numerically, the bounce rate expressed as a percentage makes it easy to compare the data meaningfully and to see that the second day had a more favorable bounce rate.

Ranking Factors

Internal ranking factors

Several factors influence the position of a site in the search results. They can be divided into external and internal ranking factors. Internal ranking factors are those that are controlled by seo aware website owners (text, layout, etc.)

Web page layout factors relevant to seo

Site structure

Common seo mistakes

External ranking factors

Number and quality of inbound links Analysis of inbound links to the page being evaluated is one of the key factors in page ranking.

Link importance (citation index, link popularity)

Link text (anchor text)

Relevance of referring pages

Google PageRank

Web page layout factors

Amount of text on a page - The optimum page size is 500-3000 words (or 2000 to 20,000 characters).

Number of keywords on a page - Keywords must be used at least three to four times in the page text.

«TITLE» tag - As a rule, 50-80 characters from the TITLE tag are displayed in search results and so you should limit the size of the title to this length.

Description Meta tag - Description Meta tag text be brief, but informative and attractive. It must also contain keywords appropriate to the page.

Keywords in links - use keywords in the text of page links that refer to other pages on your site and to any external Internet resources

Number of pages You should periodically publish more information on your site – news, press releases, articles, useful tips, etc.

Common search engine principles

  • To understand seo you need to be aware of the architecture of search engines. They all contain the following main components:
  • Spider - a browser-like program that downloads web pages and does not have any visual components and works directly with the underlying HTML code of the page.
  • Crawler - This program finds all links on each page.
  • Indexer - This component parses each page and analyzes the various elements, such as text, headers, structural or stylistic features, special HTML tags, etc
  • Results Engine - extracts search results from the database. It determines which pages best match a user's query and in what order the pages should be listed
  • Web server - a server that is responsible for interaction between the user and other search engine components.

Educational, Government, Military Domain links will Increase Page Rank

There are criteria to quality links and I think all these criteria followed by .EDU, .Gov, .MIL domain also these domain are more trustable and authoritative domains for general people and search engine so there is general concept that to get link from these domain will be more attention than other domain by search engines.

Criteria for Link Quality Building

Links should be PERMANENT
RELEVANT Sites - all links from relevant related on-topic sites
High PR link will be better
Links contain TARGET KEY PHRASE as a text hyperlink
WHITE HAT - No redirects, JavaScript links, hidden links, Flash sites/pages, or other unethical or black-hat tactics
No FFA, guest books, links within forums, links within newsgroups, links farms or any other free editable site like orkut.
No more than 30 outbound links on each web page (where link is placed)
One link per domain, all from different c-classes/different IP's
Fully indexable by google-bot and index on the 3 major search engines (Google, MSN, Yahoo)

What is Page Rank
PageRank (or "PR") is a way to measure the "value" of a page per criteria set out by Google. There are maybe a hundred variables that go into determining a site's PR, but the two primary factors that can be controlled are content and in-bound links. Content tells users (and the engines) what your site is about, and inbound links to your site are counted as "votes" or "referrals" by others. Other factors include the age of a site, what type of domain it is, such as a dot.edu, dot.gov, dot.org, or dot.mil, and whether or not the site is optimized. PR is used in general to determine where a site ranks for certain phrases - utilizing content and page titles to determine which keyphrases. If a PR 7 site and a PR 5 site both have good, quality content around the same keyphrase, chances are that the PR 7 site will rank higher.

Structure of your Website

Before creating your web site, you must first define how the hierarchical structure of your site will look once completed. The IronPoint CMS web site hierarchy is built by creating parent and child web pages.

The best way to design your hierarchy is to think of it as a family tree. The following is an example of basic web site hierarchy. A web page is considered a Parent page if it has pages under it in the hierarchy. These "sub-pages" are the Child pages.

In addition to their position within the hierarchy, you must also decide what type of content each page will contain. In the example above, you can see that each of the pages has a type associated with it. Some will contain General Content while others will contain Surveys or Site Maps. Page type is important as it defines the structural elements that will be available for that page when creating its content
